LOCATION AND CLIMATE

Makarska (Middle Dalmatia, Croatia) is the center of Makarska Riviera. It is situated in naturally protected harbour, Osejava cape on the southeast and St. Peter`s peninsula from the northwest. Makarska has around 15000 inhabitants.

Makarska is very known tourist destination in Croatia. It offers beautiful beaches 2 km long. Makarska has promenades with many touristic contents. Makarska has Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers. It has around 2750 sunny hours a year, temperature from June till September over 20 C°. Mild wind mistral blows. Makarska has Mediterranean vegetation.

Vepric is Croatian sanctuary near Makarska. It is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. It was founded by bishop Juraj Caric in 1908. It is a natural cave.

HISTORY

Makarska has been inhabitated since 8000 years ago. There were found remains in the cave Bubnjavaca in the Big hill. Evidence of life in Antique time are foundings on Andrija Kacic Miosic`s square, on Glavica, and on peninsula St. Peter. Makarska was the center of Neretva`s Principality. It was very strong and developed Principality. Venetians had to pay for free sailing through this area. Neretva`s Principality was weakened in 13th century. After 13th century many rulers were leading battles for this area. Makarska was under many occupations: Turkish, Venetian, French and Austrian. During the time of Venetia, Makarska was developing the most and it connected with other regions.

Makarska was first time mentioned in 1502. in a document of Muhamed Musin. In 16th century Turks build walls and towers around the town. In 1686. Makarska was adjoined to Venetia. In that time Makarska was developing, churches and a square were built. In 1797. Makarska was adjoined to Austria and in 1805. it was under French. French were developing infrastructure, education, culture and economy. In 1813. it was again adjoined to Austria. In 1865. first time people got political ascendent on elections. Today 24.10. is the day of the town Makarska. In 18th century Makarska had public library.

Makarska is one of the most known tourist destinations in Croatia. It offers many attractions to see, beautiful beach, different accommodation, hotels, private houses, apartments... You can also enjoy in sports and for fun you can visit Makarska`s waterfront at night with many restaurants, night clubs, many people on the streets. You can go on excursions and visit some of the nearby places.
